“Hi, I’m Lauri

I design websites for £600.

Since 2005 I have been buying website design services from a wide range of sources, including freelancers, small agencies and large agencies - and I’ve gone down the DIY route. I have experienced websites starting out as a series of text and boxes plonked on a page, to where we are now; beautiful technical virtual ‘beings’ - which are often confusing for the small-business buyer.

Some organisations require highly technical complex sites which have many very sophisticated functions, but for many small businesses, you just want a slick website that works!

You don’t need to understand all the tech, spend loads of money or for it to be capable of running a space shuttle...

What you do need is someone to explain the process clearly, without their own agenda getting in the way.

Many web design agencies are brilliant and entirely necessary, however they are, of course, going to need an initial website fee and charge for ongoing charges. You might not need to do this. My other clients didn't. They just came to me. :-)

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Think it’s impossible to get a quality website which is easy to maintain, for a reasonable price? Think again.

You need 3 things for a website:

1. Domain (your address)

AKA your web address / URL - the bit which starts 'www' (although they don't always...).

Usually expect to pay (approx.) : Free / £1 per year for year 1, then £10 - £20 per year for year 2 onwards. Rarer / different endings may cost more.

But with a £600 website... I can use your existing domain name, or help you get one. I use squarespace.com to design sites. They offer a *free* domain name for the first year, if you pay for your hosting package annually.

2. Hosting (your house)

The place where you keep all your stuff. Hosting is online space where all of your website content lives, saved on the host's server.

Usually expect to pay (approx.) : £1 - £5 per month for basic websites, or up to £10 / £25 a month (£300/yr) when more space is required (e.g. for lots of images and video).

But with a £600 website... The squarespace.com fee includes hosting. Packages start at £120 + vat if paid annually or £13 + vat per month.

3. Design (Your Decorator)

The person who is going to make all of your design choices (with your approval), and actually get your content on the site - creatively and technically.

Usually expect to pay (approx.) : The sky's the limit! A quick web search shows that the average price for a small website is usually around £1k - £3k.

But with a £600 website... I only charge £600. This is low because I use squarespace.com templates which I am extremely familiar with, the whole process doesn’t take me very long and you’ll be editing in future (after setup).

Therefore £720 can take you from nothing to 'live'.

The Process

We have a good chat about what you want to achieve. I don’t use jargon you may not understand. I know you just want a blinkin’ great website.
You complete a questionnaire which tells me what you want from your website. This enables me to understand what you want it to look like, what it needs to do and who will be visiting your site. If you’re ready to complete this now, click here.
I start with a Squarespace design template, chosen based on what I’ve learnt about you. You can also choose one yourself if you wish.
I design and build your fantastic-looking, functional 5 page website. This includes the technical build and design / aesthetic / brand concept.
Then comes the exciting bit - I present you with a draft of your website! This shows you the style, content and overall vibe of your website.
If you don’t like the preview, I go away and come up with an alternative! If you do like the preview (which happens 9 times out of 10), I invoice you for the £600. As a freelancer, I don’t have an accounts department or finance facility, therefore invoices are paid, for me to commence.
I then immediately get cracking with finishing your site!
I make any changes you’ve requested, add in all of your content, we work together on any snags. The whole process can take less than 2 weeks - I don’t hang around if you don’t! And then…
YOU’RE LIVE!

What’s Included…

- I design and build a fantastic-looking, functional 5 page website using squarespace.com. This includes technical build / editing template to suit and design / aesthetic / brand decisions.
  - If your website needs to be bigger than 5 pages, I can provide a quotation.
- I choose free-of-charge, copyright free images from unsplash.com (and am happy to use yours too, of course).
- I proofread all written copy you provide.
- I link your social media accounts (Instagram, twitter, Facebook, etc) - enabling your social updates to appear on your site.
- I can add contact forms, links to other sites, price lists, appointment booking and more...
- I provide you with links to Squarespace help guides if and when you need them - and I’m always contactable for any queries you may have.
I GET YOUR SITE LIVE!
Assuming minimal waiting for content / decisions, websites can be live in under 2 weeks!
Future maintenance / edits - you'll do those yourself, with guidance.
Pages and pages of text - you need to provide the text content (I am happy to provide a bit of it, but I need to be given content to work on).
SEO / Web Marketing
'If you build it, he will come" does NOT apply to your website. You have to tell people about it!
Just because you build a website, it doesn't mean that you will automatically appear on Google search results. It takes a lot of work (adhering to Google strict search criteria), time and expert knowledge. It is a completely different discipline to web design and build. With the Squarespace platform, you can add in basic keywords and you can also optimise your content for keywords as much as possible, but if you are serious about appearing at the top of search engines, you need an SEO / web marketing agency. I can recommend someone for this, who some of my other clients use successfully. :-)
Email
If you have a professional website designed, don't let yourself down by having a gmail or hotmail email address. Professional email addresses matching your domain name are easy to get and not expensive - Squarespace has teamed up with G Suite (Google) to offer a professional email address for as little as £40/yr (or *free* for the first year, if you pay for your hosting package annually).
More pages
On even the most basic package, including galleries and blogs.
Promotional pop-ups, announcement bars and e-commerce options - future proofing your site.
Socials
You may want social media accounts to link to your website. You can use these sites to upload photos, which can then automatically appear on your site, meaning you can keep your site updated easily.
